Ingredients

  • 500 grams of chicken, boneless and cut into pieces
  • 1 cup of cracked wheat (daliya)
  • 1/2 cup of split yellow lentils (moong dal)
  • 1/2 cup of split red lentils (masoor dal)
  • 1/2 cup of chana dal (split chickpeas)
  • 1 large onion, finely sliced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 2-3 green chilies, slit
  • 1/2 cup of yogurt
  • 4 cups of water (or as needed)
  • 1/4 cup of cooking oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)
  • Fried onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cracked wheat and lentils under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them together in water for about 1 hour, then drain.
  2. In a large pot, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until golden brown. Add the minced garlic, ginger, and green chilies, and cook for another minute.
  3. Stir in the cumin seeds, coriander powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the spices are aromatic.
  4. Add the chicken pieces to the pot and cook until they are no longer pink. Then add the soaked lentils and cracked wheat, mixing everything well.
  5. Pour in 4 cups of water (or enough to cover the mixture) and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Stir occasionally, adding more water if necessary, until the mixture reaches a thick, porridge-like consistency.
  6. Once cooked, stir in the yogurt and mix well. Adjust the seasoning if needed. Cook for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  7. Ladle the haleem into bowls, garnish with fresh coriander leaves and fried onions. Serve hot with lemon wedges on the side.

Chicken Haleem is a labor of love that rewards you with its incredible flavor and comforting texture. It's perfect for sharing with family and friends, making every meal a special occasion. Enjoy this delightful dish and impress your guests with your culinary prowess!
