What Started it all:
Chocolate chips
This isn’t your grandma’s baklava—this is a Mediterranean twist that’ll knock your socks off! We’re infusing the traditional layers of phyllo pastry with a delightful surprise of chocolate chips. Get ready to impress your guests, and for heaven’s sake, pay attention!
Ingredients
- 1 package of phyllo pastry (16 oz)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 cup almonds, finely chopped
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- A pinch of salt
- Zest of 1 orange (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Get that heat going because we’re not here to play games!
- Prepare the filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, almonds, chocolate chips, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. If you want to elevate this, add the orange zest. Mix it well—don’t just sit there, give it some elbow grease!
- Layer the phyllo: Take the phyllo pastry out and cover it with a damp cloth. You don’t want it drying out like a desert! Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Lay down one sheet of phyllo, brush with butter, and repeat for about 5 sheets. This is your base, so make it sturdy!
- Add the filling: Spread a thin layer of the nut-chocolate mixture over the phyllo. Don’t be shy—make it even and spread it out properly.
- Continue layering: Repeat the phyllo and filling process (5 sheets, filling, 5 sheets) until all the filling is used. Finish with at least 5 more sheets of phyllo on top. Brush the final layer generously with butter!
- Cut the baklava: Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Don’t just hack at it, make it look presentable!
- Bake: Pop the baklava in the oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on it—don’t let it burn!
- Prepare the syrup: While the baklava is baking, combine sugar, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring it to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for about 10 minutes. Let it cool slightly.
- Pour the syrup: Once the baklava is out of the oven, immediately pour the syrup over it. This will soak the layers and make it divine! Let it cool completely before serving.
There you have it! A stunning Chocolate Chip Baklava that’ll make you the star of any gathering. Serve it up with a side of pride, and watch as everyone devours it. Now get out there and show them what you’re made of!
