A classic and comforting French onion soup recipe that is perfect for a cozy night in.

Ingredients

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of French bread
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  3. Pour in the beef broth and white wine. Stir in the sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for 30-40 minutes.
  4. While the soup is simmering, preheat your broiler. Place the French bread slices on a baking sheet and toast them under the broiler until they are golden brown.
  5. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of toasted bread on top of each bowl of soup, then sprinkle a generous amount of Gruyere cheese over the bread.
  6. Place the bowls under the broiler for a few minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Carefully remove the bowls from the broiler and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
