French Onion Soup

A classic and comforting French onion soup recipe that is perfect for a cozy night in.
Ingredients
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 6 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of French bread
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
- Pour in the beef broth and white wine. Stir in the sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for 30-40 minutes.
- While the soup is simmering, preheat your broiler. Place the French bread slices on a baking sheet and toast them under the broiler until they are golden brown.
- Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls. Place a slice of toasted bread on top of each bowl of soup, then sprinkle a generous amount of Gruyere cheese over the bread.
- Place the bowls under the broiler for a few minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Carefully remove the bowls from the broiler and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
