Ingredients

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 6 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of French bread
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic to the pot and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  3. Pour in the beef broth, white wine, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for another 20-30 minutes.
  4. While the soup is simmering, preheat the broiler. Place the French bread slices on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are toasted.
  5. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and place a slice of toasted French bread on top of each bowl. Sprinkle a generous amount of Gruyere cheese over the bread.
  6. Place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Carefully remove the bowls from the broiler and serve the French onion soup hot.
