- 4 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 6 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of French bread
- 1 1/2 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
Instructions
- In a large pot, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.

- Pour in the beef broth, white wine, Worcestershire sauce, and dried thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Bring the soup to a simmer and let it cook for another 20-30 minutes.
- While the soup is simmering, preheat the broiler. Place the French bread slices on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes on each side until they are toasted.
- Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and place a slice of toasted French bread on top of each bowl. Sprinkle a generous amount of Gruyere cheese over the bread.
- Place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Carefully remove the bowls from the broiler and serve the French onion soup hot.
