loco moco
Loco Moco is a classic Hawaiian comfort food dish that features a savory hamburger patty, a fried egg, and rich gravy all served over a bed of steamed rice. This hearty meal is perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Here's how to make it for 4 people.
Ingredients
- 2 cups uncooked white rice
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 green onions, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Rinse the rice until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions. Once done, keep it warm.
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, 1 egg, salt, and pepper until well combined. Form the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes, until it forms a roux. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens.
- In a separate skillet, fry the 4 eggs to your desired doneness (sunny side up is traditional).
- Divide the cooked rice among 4 plates. Place a hamburger patty on top of the rice on each plate. Pour the gravy over the hamburger patties and rice. Top each patty with a fried egg. Garnish with chopped green onions, if using.
