This Mozzarella and Gochujang Calzone is a fusion delight that brings together the creamy richness of mozzarella cheese and the spicy, tangy kick of Korean gochujang. Perfect for a hearty meal for four, this calzone will tantalize your taste buds with every bite.
Ingredients
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 4 tablespoons gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
- 2 pre-made pizza doughs (about 1 lb each)
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded (optional for added protein)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, red bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are soft and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Divide each pizza dough into two equal portions, giving you four pieces total. Roll each piece into a circle about 8 inches in diameter.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the shredded mozzarella, ricotta cheese, gochujang, and the sautéed vegetables. If using, add the shredded chicken. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Place a generous amount of the filling mixture on one half of each dough circle, leaving about 1 inch of space around the edge. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling and crimp the edges to seal. Use a fork to press down the edges for a tight seal.
- Brush the top of each calzone with the beaten egg. This will give the calzones a beautiful golden-brown color when baked.
- Place the calzones on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and crisp.
- Remove the calzones from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired. Serve warm.
These Mozzarella and Gochujang Calzones are a fun and delicious way to spice up your dinner routine. The combination of creamy cheese and spicy gochujang creates a unique flavor profile that is sure to impress. Enjoy them with a side salad or a bowl of soup for a complete meal.
