Slow Cooked Pork Shoulder Recipe

This hearty and flavourful pork shoulder recipe is perfect for serving up to four people. The slow cooking process makes the meat incredibly tender and juicy while infusing it with delicious spices and herbs.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 kg pork shoulder
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 150°C.
  2. Mix together the smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, salt and pepper to create a spice rub.
  3. Rub the spice mixture over the pork shoulder until it is completely coated.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Add the pork shoulder and sear it on both sides until browned, approximately 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Remove the pork shoulder from the skillet and place it in a large dutch oven or roasting pan.
  7. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and saute for 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
  8. Pour the chicken broth into the skillet and stir to combine.
  9. Pour the chicken broth mixture over the pork shoulder in the roasting pan.
  10. Cover the pan and transfer it to the preheated oven.
  11. Bake the pork shoulder for 4-5 hours, or until it is tender and falling apart.
  12. Remove the pork shoulder from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes.
  13. Use two forks to shred the pork shoulder into bite-sized pieces.
  14. Serve the pork shoulder on a platter with your favourite side dishes.
