What Started it all:
Yeast syrup fritters(can be risen or puffed in the oven)
These delightful yeast syrup fritters are a perfect treat for any occasion. Light, fluffy, and sweet, they can be risen or puffed in the oven to achieve the perfect texture. This recipe serves 4 people.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk, warmed
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- 1/2 cup syrup (maple or honey)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the activated yeast mixture and the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix until a smooth dough forms.
- Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Scoop small portions of the dough (about 2 tablespoons each) and shape them into small balls or fritter shapes.
- If you prefer a lighter texture, allow the shaped dough to rise for an additional 15-20 minutes.
- In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place a few fritters at a time into the hot oil. Fry until they are golden brown on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
- Drizzle the warm fritters with your choice of syrup and dust with powdered sugar if desired. Serve immediately while they are still warm and enjoy!
These yeast syrup fritters are a delicious and indulgent treat that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Whether you choose to rise them a second time for extra puffiness or fry them right away, they are sure to be a hit. Enjoy them with a drizzle of syrup and a sprinkle of powdered sugar for the perfect finishing touch.
